What does it take to

What does it take to build a truly open knowledge ecosystem?

Anne-Marie Scott, Vice-President, COL, joined fellow open learning experts to deliver a training session on the future of open knowledge ecosystems at UNESCO's #digitallearningweek in Paris this week.

With a focus on moving from policy to practice, the discussion examined the role of open repositories and open data infrastructures as the connective tissue of the knowledge commons. It also highlighted that openness works best when treated as a system in which Open Educational Resources, Open Access, Open Data and Open Science are governed together, rather than in isolation.

Participants were invited to reflect on gaps within their own institutional policies, the role of shared public infrastructure, and identify practical steps to advance openness in their local contexts.

The story explores how institutions can support learners in critically evaluating AI-generated content and misinformation, while navigating multilingual and increasingly complex digital environments.

On Eswatini’s Inde

On Eswatini’s Independence Day, COL celebrates the country’s growing focus on flexible learning, digital skills, and more inclusive pathways into education and training.

As a small state, Eswatini brings an important perspective to regional and Commonwealth collaboration, while recent national efforts have focused on advancing Open TVET, expanding digital and open learning, and creating more opportunities for women and girls in STEM.

Alongside our work in open schooling and higher education, COL’s wider partnership with Eswatini has supported professional development for nurses and midwives and the creation of resources connecting education with climate awareness and resilience.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration to widen access and equip learners with the knowledge and skills they need for the future.
